I grew up in Galway city, but my real education happened on the shores of Omey Island. My grandparents would take me out there on summer holidays — walking across the sand causeway, timing our routes around the tides, learning to read the water and the land. That's where my fascination started.
After finishing my geography degree at NUI Galway in 2007, I spent five years working with Galway County Council's tourism department. My job was practical: audit coastal paths, check accessibility, document hazards. I walked every route myself — multiple times across different seasons. That's where I realized something important: most guides were written by young, fit people who'd never actually walked them slowly, or with mobility concerns, or in winter conditions.
In 2013, I published a detailed guide to Omey Island's causeway — timing it across tidal cycles, mapping safe routes, explaining what retirees actually needed to know. It became the regional standard. That's when I knew this was what I wanted to focus on.
